CANON HISTORY: Theobald was born into a pleasant enough family that unfortunately made its home in a city full of gang violence. At a young age, his parents died due to a falling out, and Theo was left to fend for himself on the streets. In doing so, he ended up the leader of a pack of similar orphans, and did the majority of the stealing to obtain supplies for their survival as their collective ‘big brother.’ However, this time did not last long; one of the kids swiped a gun from the gang in power, and realizing the immense ramifications of such an act, Theo went himself to return the gun and beg to repay the gang for the trouble so they wouldn’t bring their wrath down upon the group. He agreed to join the gang in order to repay this debt and then went on to sell a kidney in order to get cash - this, he tossed to his former siblings, telling them coldly to get themselves out of the city and never face him again, because money was the single most important thing - not bonds. His siblings, understandably hurt by his words, packed up and left, and Theo went on to work for the unnamed gang.
He worked with them for years to pay them back before he finally cut and run at some unspecified time, although he received a slash on his face that ended up scarring. Though he changes his appearance in every town he goes to in order to keep evading the gang’s attention, the scar remains a clear indicator of his true identity.
He started up a life as a con man, lying and scamming people out of their money, but also collecting information and on occasion simply doing ordinary jobs to fund his journey to the next town, and the next. He acquired many skills over this time, utilizing everything he could learn in order to create his next persona or earn a little extra cash.
One day, he woke up to a dragon’s egg laying under his bed. Excited at the prospect of making even more money due to the rarity of dragons, he cared for the egg - until it hatched into a young girl. Suddenly, his life was complicated by the fact that he essentially had a five year old to look out for on top of watching out for his own back, and the whole dragon thing seemed far less worth the trouble. Still, it turned out she had a rather unique ability in that if anyone should lie around her, it would turn into a monster that could then be defeated. Oddly, Theo’s lies never seemed to be detected by this power, but it nevertheless turned out handy in their travels together. There are four places in particular that are documented through the novel and the games:
The Lie-Eating Dragon and the Forgotten-Color Songstress: Indigo Town, a place where half the people seemed to be absurdly happy and the other half oddly morose. He traveled to this place on an informant’s tip to find the bluebird of happiness, supposedly spotted here. In doing so he and the dragon child Efina ended up wrapped up in the problems of Mischa, an amnesiac singer who sings every day to the joy of the happy people, and Phil, her servant who struggled with the knowledge that she would never recall him or their friendship. As it turned out, Phil’s desires had spawned the birth of a dragon with bright blue feathers, who had likely been mistaken as the bluebird of happiness. Its power allowed it to create illusions to make people happy, but due to its youth and inexperience with its power, it was taxing itself to the point of danger. Meanwhile, Mischa soon became consumed by her own lies, because although she did indeed have trouble retaining short-term memories, she knew at least that she recognized Phil, even if she couldn’t recall what they had done together. Due to Efina’s abilities, these lies manifested in a physical form, allowing only Theo and Efina to destroy them and free the girl of the creatures - as well as her own lies.
The Lie-Eating Dragon and the Vermilion Vampire: Vermillion Town, rumored to be a place in which vampires once lived. Theo took Efina here to cash in on the blue feathers from the ‘blue bird of happiness’ to the informant who had provided him with the original tip, only to begin investigating the vampire family that supposedly lived in the town once. However, by the time Theo and Efina arrived, all the houses were left empty and only the siblings Keith and Rachel Rigfire remained. After one particular night, the informant was found dead in an alleyway, and Theo and Efina managed to sleuth out the truth - Keith had been covering for Rachel’s tracks, as she was born with the vampire blood, but not he. Once again they faced a person consumed by their lies, and once again they were able to free the victim from their own deceit. Rachel was placed in a facility that would help care for her need for blood, and Keith followed to continue watching over her as well; the pair then moved on once more.
LiEat the Lie Eating Dragon & the Azure Dreameater: after some time, the two ended up stealing the clothes off of a drunkard in the streets in Azure Town on accounts of Theo spending all of their money on buying clothes for Efina. Finding that the man was apparently to be a guard at a casino, Theo decided to help himself to the job instead. He was instantly found out by Lucas the flirty bartender, but Lucas decided to let it slide on accounts of knowing the real guard and finding the man to be a huge jerk. After introducing themselves to the various workers, Theo assumed his job and Efina was allowed to run about as she pleased, so long as she stayed within the casino and didn’t bother the guests. Eventually it came out that something funny was happening with Lucas and his girlfriend Olivia - more precisely, Olivia was beating Lucas for his infedelity, and Lucas was lying to say he didn’t remember any such thing occurring. Meanwhile, a young boy in the care of the casino owner, Will, supported Olivia by erasing Efina and Theo’s memories using his own power as a young dragon. More lies were cleaned out, more truths revealed, and Theo and Efina prepared to move on... Although during it all, Efina did note that some of the lies seem to have been generated by Theo himself...
LiEat the Lie Eating Dragon & the Gold Thief: again after some time, Theo and Efina find themselves in a new place. This time Theo is hired on to prevent a phantom thief from stealing the treasure of a great mansion. However, when the phantom thief attacks, it turns out to be none other than a plot hatched by Theo’s former siblings. In pursuing them, Theo runs across a plot among the servants, as one in particular was in fact part of his old gang and had been poisoning the Master of the house for failing to pay up on time. After solving this, the phantom thieves jumped in once more, using a device they had designed to interfere with Efina’s powers as a dragon to separate the pair and force Theo to be consumed by his own lies. Efina, relying on the help of the dragons in the police force who have become quite familiar with Theo over the course of his exploits, aid her as she is another dragon like them. They warn her that if she is not strong enough, using up all of her power could destroy her, but she presses on to save Theo in spite of it.
And in the end... She succeeds, eating up all of the lies that had corrupted Theo. Freed from them, Theo finally apologizes to his siblings. The youngest, Cyril, only grudgingly accepts them - though the other two, Enos and Gene, agree that they’ve troubled him quite enough after everything he’s gone through. They depart, and Theo too returns to traveling as he always did with Efina... Though he does finally relent and allow her to call him by his true name instead of his aliases, so long as no one else is around to hear it.
CANON PERSONALITY: Theo is a liar. He started when he lied to his siblings about leaving them for money, and he’s been lying and lying ever since. His lies make up who he is, almost literally: in each new place he comes across, he lies about his identity, lies about his skills, lies about everything he is. And he’s so skilled at it, he’s successful every time. He does enjoy his lifestyle to some extent, but deep down, he began to harbor a wish: a wish for all of his lies to vanish once and for all. It was this wish that gave Efina life, although he didn’t understand it at first, and she eventually made good on that - or at least, cleared up the lies that he felt the most guilt about.
Because indeed, for all his lying, he does care about others and feels guilt when he fails them. His lie to his siblings to force them away continues to shadow him even though it’s been so many years, he can hardly even recall their names. And, more recently, although she is a huge liability for him, he does make sure to care for Efina and protect her from catching the attention of those who would sell dragons on the black market. He’s gruff with her and far and away from the best role model, but he makes sure she’s fed and well-dressed, even to the point of blowing all their cash on her clothes. As much as he tries not to care, he can’t help but get attached to people, and shows his affection by doting on them in the gruffest, meanest way possible.
It’s this nature that seems to get him caught up in the various events from town to town. Rarely does he ever need to get involved in any of the incidents; a dragon overusing its power, the death of an informant, the abuse of a man at the hands of his girlfriend. However, each time, Theo reluctantly goes about sleuthing out the answer and guiding the victims through the aftermath of their lies, exposing the truth and helping kick them back onto the road of recovering from the damage dealt by living those lies for so long. He’ll grumble all the while, but he gets the job done in the end, and it’s occurred enough times to put him on decent terms with the police in spite of, you know. Being a known con man.
That said, for as much as he cares about others, he definitely isn’t nice. If allowed to act as himself, he’s rough and rude. He likes money, beer, and women, and he makes no secret of this. He expresses disinterest in most things at best, and frequently annoyance at any particular inconvenience. His coldness to Efina leaves her questioning if he cares about her, to the point where he has to finally admit that if he didn’t, he wouldn’t have bothered dragging her along with him everywhere - he tries to keep others at a distance and often times it works.
On the other hand, if he has a need to be pleasant, he can slip on that personality as easily as a glove. When acting as Hal, he becomes youthful and energetic and frankly obsequious, cheerfully doing whatever he’s asked and being as helpful as humanly possible. It’s enough to fool most of the people at the casino, save for Lucas on accounts of his knowing the real Harold. It shows again when he presents himself as Sid in Gold Town, all pleasant smiles as he promises to assist in guarding the treasure from the Phantom Thieves. He’ll discard these personalities the moment he doesn’t need them since it’s tiring to pretend to be so nice, but he’s still a master of his art, and only recognizable by those who have reason to know or suspect him beforehand.
Over all, he’s a pragmatist, carefully weighing his options for the best outcome. He’s stingy with his money, and as a scammer, he knows all the tricks to avoid - he won’t accept anything free unless he’s certain there’s no strings attached. He’ll lie, cheat, and trick his way through things, but he’ll never make a sworn enemy if he can avoid it. He doesn’t want anyone else on his back for any reason, so he avoids taking any action that could leave lingering resentment that could lead to trouble down the line. He’s far from moral, but he’s not inclined towards killing for cash. He’s fine with using his knives as a threat or for defense, but the less fighting he has to do to earn his keep, the better. As much as trouble tends to find him, Theo is happiest with a lot of money and as little complication as possible.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
-Knife throwing/dagger-related combat abilities.
-Miscellaneous knowledge of herbs and flora.
-If with Efina, he is capable of fighting the lies produced by her powers (others cannot harm them).

PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: He lacks any of the scarring his original had. Otherwise, he appears the “same” in that his build is similar, his eyes are blue, and his hair is long and naturally dirty blonde. However, thanks to his eccentric tastes in fashions, he’s constantly showing up as Kestrel Blade with new mixes of hair colors and color contacts to keep his appearance fresh.
AU HISTORY:
❖ Grew up in a loving family with his biological parents. From a young age he grew interested in acting - perhaps understandable from all of the colorful stories from his own imagination that he played out on his own. Seeing a good opportunity to encourage their son’s creativity, he was enrolled in children’s theatre classes.
❖ His parents later adopted foster children into their home, hoping to give them a better life along with their biological son. One such child was Atsushi (
beneathmoonlight).
❖ Unfortunately, a year later his parents died in a car accident. Although his aunt and uncle were willing to take him in due to his acting having expanded into actual gigs, they did not want anything to do with the adopted children, who were placed back into the foster care system. Theo was twelve at the time.
❖ Finally scoring a role in a film, Theo decided to establish himself as Kestrel Blade in the acting world, named after his Original Character from all of those play stories he came up with. He would stick to this name throughout the years, although it later became a choice of pragmatism in order to keep his work and personal lives separate.
❖ He continued to act, gaining more and more fame as a child actor in various films. His aunt and uncle encouraged this for their own benefit, as they took a good chunk of his earnings for themselves. As a result, he was only too eager to live on his own right as he turned eighteen, building up his cash once again with all the intent of actually keeping it this time.
❖ During this time, he also began diving deep into the fashion industry to further set himself apart from other actors. As a result he quickly became known for his eccentric, yet still quite flattering appearances that seemed to change on a weekly basis.
❖ He continued landing major movie roles and primarily supported himself on the money earned from those, moving to Recollé permanently once he received a role in a restaurant drama featuring an ensemble cast. The series itself is set in Recollé, with most scenes shot on-location, making it the perfect place to settle down at age 23.
❖ Given he’d be in one place with a steady job for a while, he began attending Recollé university for finance, wherein he met classmate Nami (
weatherscience) and ran into another bar frequenter Manon (
wantnotneed)... Although the former he’d also met as Kestrel Blade during a social event, as she’d escorted one of the other guests for the night.
❖ He also met Nazuna (
pronounces) and Kurt (
digthefuzz) during various acting ventures/social events.
❖ Sometime after moving to Recollé, Biffy (
dandyofawolf) totally recognized him as a bakery customer, oops.
AU PERSONALITY:
❖ Still very practical, still a very good actor. He doesn’t have nearly the same extent of the original Theo’s experiences to draw upon, but he’s definitely gone out of his way to develop various skills in case it turns out to be handy for a job, such as horse/chocobo riding.
❖ Unlike the original Theo, he has no inclination whatsoever towards crime. All of his money is made cleanly; at most, he’ll schmooze to try to get close to executives in order to land more roles, but he’d rather not get involved in anything too heinous.
❖ He still feels guilty about what happened to his adopted siblings, but he has made zero effort to do anything about it. From his point of view, they were thrown out because they weren’t profitable the way he was, and that definitely stings since he’d latched onto them as an older sibling at the time.
❖ As Kestrel Blade, he maintains various social media accounts documenting his life and much of his fashion and style choices, all with the cheerful and sparkling personality he’s cultivated for his working persona. He comes across as playful but over all kind, and frequently responds to a fair amount of his followers. It’s won him a lot of devoted fans, which is all according to plan.
❖ When going incognito, he allows himself to be... well, himself. Grumpy and easily iritable with a cheeky tongue. He’s under no obligation to make friends, so he simply won’t, focusing on his finance studies so he can learn to properly invest his money to make the most of it in the future.
